After spending a few days in Paris, we took the train down to Angers. It was so great to see my parents waiting for us at th train station. The next morning, after arriving in Angers, we rented a car and went to Normandy with my parents. We left in the afternoon and drove and drove until we arrived at the World War II museum in Caen. We spent a couple hours there and it was fascinating! We probably would have spent longer there, but the museum closed. We then went on quite the adventure to try and find our hotel. Word to the wise: if you’re going to stay at a B&B hotel in France, get a better map :). After a lot of driving, stopping and looking at a roadside map, dad asking directions, and mom breaking into the emergency chcolate fund (that we didn’t know about until it was half gone :) It was good times in Caen. That evening we ate at a little creperie.
The next morning, we headed to Arromanches. There on the beaches were evidences of World War II. There were big things out in the water that the Americans used to bring in shipments. They would sink boats to do that. Then we went to the American Cemetery.
Arromanches
The cemetery sits on the beaches of D-Day. It’s so beautiful and peaceful here, so hard to believe the horrific war scene that took place here not too long ago.
After the cemetery we went to Pointe du Hoc. Here, the American scaled to steep cliffs and took over this portion occupied by the Germans. This place is scattered with German Bunkers and big craters where bombs landed.
After visiting all the World War II places, we headed over to one of my favorite places: Mont St. Michel…a city on a rock.
When the tide comes in the city is surrounded by water. At the top of the city sits a huge, very old cathedral.
View from the top of the cathedral.
The streets are narrow and steep lined with little shops leading up to the cathedral.
We got pretty thirsty hiking around so mom purchased this big water bottle. Bryce practicing his touristy skills.
That night we headed for another B&B and it took us forever to find…again! But we ate at a great pizzeria and food makes everything better. The next morning we headed over to St. Malo….a beautiful walled city.
After walking around the entire city of St. Malo, we headed to a couple other small cities. One was very old and the buildings hung over the streets. It was a cute little town.
It was a great weekend trip with only a few mishaps and a couple wrong turns. We got to see so much. Thanks mom and dad for taking us on such a great adventure!
